Here in Northeast Alabama, we’ve been getting a LOT of rain. But I’m one of those weird people who likes gray, rainy days! Did you know there’s a name for people who like rain?

Pluviophile: (n) a lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days.

That’s me!

I love the sound of rain and often open a window at home just to hear rainfall. Is there a more soothing sound?

So I thought this would be the perfect time to share Fashion Over 50: Rainy Day Style. Want to guess what my favorite rainy day fashion accessory is? If you know me very well you’ve probably already guessed. If not, read on.

Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.

Langston Hughes

Okay. So maybe I like the rain but I’d prefer that it NOT beat upon my head! An umbrella can be a fashion accessory especially if you have one like Father Brown—classic black with curved wooden handle.

But an umbrella isn’t my favorite rainy day accessory.

And I don’t own a pair of “cute” rainboots unless you count my trusty L.L. Bean boots which I consider to be quite cute! Mine were thrifted years ago (of course!).

So what is my favorite rainy-day-fashion-accessory? Hats!! I’ve been a hat-wearer for years so I’m sharing some of my hat pics (old and new) with you today even though some of the photos are poor quality. Sorry about that.

As you can tell, I don’t just wear hats on rainy days. Hats camouflage bad hair days and keep the sun out of my eyes and off my face besides making a fashion statement.

(If you’re one of those people who say, “I can’t wear a hat. Hat’s don’t look good on me,” be sure to read to the end or just scroll past all the pics and read my response to that statement. Hint: I won’t try to convince you to wear a hat!)

To add a silver lining to all the rainy day clouds, I’m adding a few fun quotes about rain.

Rain showers my spirit and waters my soul.

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater.

3. Wool hats keep me warm on cold days!

“Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.”
– John Ruskin

But Hat’s Don’t Look Good On Me!

I hear it all the time! “I wish I looked good in a hat.”

To be honest, I don’t always feel like I look good in a hat, but I love to wear them so I do!

I wish I looked good in plaid flannel and leggings but that’s another post!

Here’s the thing about hats or any other piece of clothing or accessory. If YOU don’t feel comfortable wearing it then DON’T! Fashion Over 50 or fashion at any age is about wearing clothes and accessories that honor who we are as Image-bearers. We want to present ourselves in a way that testifies to a Creator and Redeemer who gives us beauty for ashes!

To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for his own glory.

Isaiah 61:3

Did you get that?

  • beauty for ashes
  • a joyous blessing instead of mourning
  • festive praise instead of despair

I believe dressing to please or impress others or wearing uncomfortable, unflattering clothing diminishes the light we’ve been called to shine in a dark world. So . . .

Be comfortable.

Be stylish whether it’s preppy, vintage, bohemian, chic, casual, sophisticated, or tomboy.

Be thrifty or at least a good steward of your resources.

But always, always be YOU—a great oak that the LORD has planted for his own glory!
