I love being in the “fashion over 50” club! There’s a confidence that comes with this season of life that I didn’t have when I was younger. (If you don’t have it yet, I hope this post encourages you!)
I’ve always enjoyed shopping for clothes, shoes, and accessories but when I was younger I probably spent way too much time and money trying to be “in style” or wear what others thought I should. I was a little envious of those who seemed to be born with confidence and effortless style. (I think I’ve learned their secret and the good news is that it doesn’t require us to be uncomfortable, overspend, or dress to please others.)
Regardless of age, what we wear and how we present ourselves to our family and the world is a reflection of what we believe about who we are and how we feel about our place in the world.
How we dress is one of the ways we can reflect the beauty and goodness of God.
I’m not a fashion guru by any means (unless you count thrift store style!) so my goal here is simply to inspire you to be you to the glory of God!
I’ve learned that I have more confidence and more fun when I focus on what matters to me when it comes to fashion:
my style + comfort + budget-friendly
Since I often get comments and questions about my outfits I thought it would be fun to write about it more on the blog. Who knows, maybe Fashion Over 50 will be a weekly thing for me?!
Layers and Lace
Winter in the Deep South means temperatures are unpredictable and can vary drastically from day to day and from morning to midday. A sensible solution is to dress in layers. I like the layered look year ’round but rely on it heavily during winter. Light layers are comfortable under a heavy coat when temps are low in the morning; and are equally comfortable throughout the day as the temps warm-up.
One of my favorite ways to layer in the colder months is with tee-shirts and cardigans. Here’s what I wore to the office one day this week:
The cardigan, tee-shirt, and jeans all came from the thrift store but this outfit is so easy to duplicate! It checks all my boxes:
my style + comfort + budget-friendly
I like t-shirts that have fun designs and words but I have plain, solid color tees in my closet, too. The shirt I’m wearing here is an Old Navy brand and says “Life is Grand”. Reminds me of the quote I shared this week on my Instagram page and on my Facebook page:
When it comes to cardigans I prefer mine a little long and loose and pockets are a must for me!
The pants I’m wearing are dressier lightweight denim. They have a wide waistband and wide leg so they’re super comfortable.
My leopard print flats were a Target find several seasons ago but you can click here to find a similar pair they have online now.
I usually layer necklaces, too.
The square stone necklace was thrifted and I’ve had the gold cross since highschool. The key necklace stamped “Abide” is one of my favorite pieces of jewelry I’ve worn for years. I found it on Etsy and you can click here to find lots of similar options.
Last week on Instagram I shared a photo of another favorite outfit.
This coat is lightweight and unlined so it’s the perfect top layer over a tshirt on a cool day.
The “teddy bear” coat came from Burkes Outlet but I found a similar one on Amazon. I love my “fear is a liar” tee-shirt. I found it on Etsy and you can click here to order your own.
I shared this on Instagram stories:
Eric and I needed new headshots for our business’ website so we had asked our friend Kevin to take a few photos. (Thanks, Kevin. You did a great job and obviously make a photo session fun!)
The look on his face!
But doesn’t he look handsome?!
He’s going for the layered look, too! Eric’s clothes were not thrifted (Jos. A. Bank) although he does have quite a few thrifted items in his closet.
My pretty lace top was thrifted and might be one of my all-time favorite finds. I’ve searched the internet and can’t find anything comparable.
Have Fun With Fashion
I hope you’ve been inspired and encouraged!
My style isn’t anything special, but you and I are worth the time it takes to dress well—to wear our favorite colors, to wear what’s comfortable, to wear what makes us happy.
I like this quote by Dale Carnegie:
The expression a woman wears on her face is far more important than the clothes she wears on her back.
But the Apostle Paul said it best:
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 1 Peter 3:3-4
Thank you for being here and letting me share my Fashion Over 50 post with you. The inspiration came from one of my favorite bloggers: Rhoda at Southern Hospitality. She’s been doing Fashion Over 50 posts every Wednesday for years! She has such a sweet spirit and I know you would love her blog and how she shares about her life as much as I do.
I’ll be back tomorrow with some of my recent thrifted finds and a DIY project I’m working on!
Love, love, love it. 🤗
