How to Be Thankful for Thanksgiving

Last Updated on November 20, 2025 by Stacy Averette

Thanksgiving looks different for all of us.

For some, it’s a joyful gathering filled with noise, laughter, and familiar faces around a crowded table. For others, it’s quieter this year — maybe by choice, maybe by circumstance, maybe because life has changed faster than your heart could keep up.

You may be hosting in a house that doesn’t feel “ready.”
You may be navigating schedules with adult children who won’t be with you this year.
You may be grieving the empty chair of someone you love.
You may be carrying the unspoken weight of family tension or the ache of unmet expectations.

If you feel that this Thanksgiving carries a mixture of gratitude and heaviness, you’re not alone. You’re seen. And you’re loved.

Take a breath, friend. God meets us in the middle of our real lives — the messy kitchens, the thrifted tablescapes, the imperfect moments, the complicated families, and the tender places of our hearts.

Let this prayer be a soft place to rest.

A Thanksgiving Prayer for the One Who Feels the Weight of the Season

Lord,
As Thanksgiving approaches, I come to You with both full hands and an honest heart.
This season is beautiful, but it is also complicated and stressful. So I ask for Your peace to settle over my home, my mind, and my family.

For the one who is hosting — give strength, joy, and the grace to release perfection.
Remind me that love matters more than matching dishes and magazine-worthy tables.
Bless my cozy, collected home — the thrifted treasures, the lived-in spaces, the imperfections that make it real and welcoming.

For the mother whose adult children won’t be home this year — comfort the ache, calm the comparison, and bless their gatherings wherever they are.
Help me celebrate the season they’re in without feeling forgotten in mine.

For the one grieving the empty chair at the table — wrap Your arms tenderly around that sacred sorrow.
Let memories bring warmth, not just tears.
Remind my heart that love is eternal and that You are near to the brokenhearted.

For the one who feels overwhelmed — with planning, preparing, cleaning, or caring — steady my spirit.
Help me move through this week slowly, gratefully, intentionally.
Let me rest in the truth that quiet faithfulness is enough.

For the family dynamics that feel tense or strained, go ahead of us, smoothing what needs smoothing and softening what needs softening.
Bring gentleness to our words, patience to our hearts, and unity to our spirit.

And Father, on this Thanksgiving, help me see joy in the small things:
the warm light in the kitchen,
the sound of a familiar hymn,
the comfort of a worn tablecloth,
the blessing of breath, hope, and home.

Thank You for Your steadfast love in every season — even this one.
Especially this one.
Amen.
