How to Pray in Faith Over Your Adult Children
Last Updated on December 3, 2025 by Stacy Averette
There’s a unique ache a mother feels when her children become adults.
You still love them fiercely, pray for them constantly, and carry their joys and struggles in your heart—but you can’t step in and guide them the way you once did. And that tension can create anxiety, fear, or even guilt.
If you’ve ever whispered, “Lord, I don’t know what to do… but I want to trust You,”
you are not alone.
Today I want to help you find a simple, peaceful way to pray for your adult children—one that strengthens your heart while blessing theirs.

There’s a special kind of ache that comes with mothering adult children—loving deeply, praying constantly, and learning to trust God in ways we never imagined.
I created a gentle, Scripture-rich prayer printable to help you pray with peace instead of fear.

1. Shift from Fixing to Trusting
As our children grow, our role shifts too.
Not away from love, but toward trust.
Trusting God with their:
- decisions,
- relationships,
- emotions,
- faith,
- and future.
This kind of trust doesn’t come naturally.
But prayer makes it possible.
2. Start with Who God Is (Not What You Fear)
Instead of starting with fear…
“What if they make the wrong choice?”
“What if they get hurt?”
…start with truth:
“God is faithful.”
“God is with them.”
“God loves them even more than I do.”
This shift brings instant calm.
3. Pray Scripture Over Your Adult Children
Scripture anchors our hearts when emotions feel loud.
Here are a few of my favorite verses to pray:
Wisdom: James 1:5
Protection: Psalm 121
Peace: Philippians 4:7
Purpose: Ephesians 2:10
Strength: Isaiah 40:31
Pick one verse and pray it over your child by name.
4. Release What You Can’t Control
This might be the hardest part of mothering adults.
You can’t control their choices…
But you can entrust them to God.
And that’s where peace lives.
If you feel your shoulders tightening, whisper a simple release prayer:
“Lord, I release ____ into Your loving care.
Lead them, protect them, and guide them.”

5. Let Prayer Become a Place of Peace
Prayer isn’t about saying “the right thing.”
It’s about returning to the One who holds both you and your child.
Even when:
- you’re worried
- you’re unsure
- they’re struggling
- you feel helpless
God is not.
