For the Love of New Orleans: Music

Last Updated on December 18, 2025 by Stacy Averette

Hee Haw, American Bandstand, and Soul Train. Clearly, I was exposed to good music growing up in small-town Alabama. The 70s and 80s had the best country and classic rock, and still do if you ask anyone at my house.

But the fact that I also know that Lawrence Welk and I were born on the same day, sixty-three years apart, can only mean one thing: I grew up watching the Lawrence Welk Show. I still have a soft spot for Big Band music.

While I can appreciate almost every kind of music, I have an unparalleled fondness for Jazz that I owe to our time spent in New Orleans.

You’ll see and hear all kinds of live music as you stroll through the French Quarter. Some of it draws a crowd. Most of it’s good. All of it is part of what makes visits to the Quarter memorable.

Here are some of my favorite photos of street music from past trips to New Orleans.
