I love for my home to smell lovely but I’m kind of picky when it comes to scents. A clean, fresh scent that’s not overpowering or chemical-smelling is what I look for when buying cleaning products for my home.

January was a blur but I did manage to do some post-holiday decluttering. I was happy to get my home back in order, cleaned, and ready for a new year. (Okay. Truth be told it’s not completely back in order, cleaned and ready but our homes are always a work in progress!) And decluttering is a critical step to cleaning because I can hear Flylady saying, “You can’t clean clutter!” Anyway . . .

A fresh page on the calendar inspires me to take stock of what I can do to make our home a haven for myself, my family, and the friends who pass through from time to time. Making sure my home smells fresh and inviting is a big priority especially in the cold, gray days of winter. Lovely scents really lift my spirits!

In this post I’m sharing three different non-toxic methods I use to make our home (and office) smell lovely!

#1 Grove Collaborative

Grove Collaborative has so many products to choose from that I often have a hard time deciding which ones to buy. Their products make great gifts, too!

I’ve purchased different cleaning products in stores and online and I don’t think you can beat the quality or the price of the products (and you know how thrifty I am!). I thought you might like to see what I chose, how I use the products and some important facts about the ordering/shipping process.

My Grove Collaborative Order

How to Make Your Home Smell Lovely

  1. Mrs. Meyer’s Basil Hand Soap — This product is on sale right now: $3.94 for 12.5 ounces plus you get a free basil hand sanitizer! There are several different scents to choose from but I love the smell of Basil and this hand soap is perfect for the kitchen sink. The smell is so fresh and makes your hands (and the whole room) smell lovely. Hand soap is always a part of my Grove order. “Fun fact: This garden-fresh line of Mrs. Meyer’s hand soaps was inspired by an Iowa homemaker and mother of nine kids. (Yes, we said nine.) If anyone knows how to get rid of filth and grime, it’s definitely a mother of nine. This Mrs. Meyer’s soap is a healthy-home must-have for anyone looking for cruelty-free, phthalate-free, and paraben-free soap to scrub away dirt and germs. Plus, it’ll leave your hands feeling super hydrated, instead of desert-like dry.”
  2. Mrs. Meyer’s Lemon Verbena Hand and Dish Soap Duo — The duo is on sale right now for $6.95. That includes 12.5-ounce hand soap and 18-ounce dish soap. We don’t have a dishwasher, and even as empty-nesters, we have lots of dirty dishes. Having a hard-working, great smelling dish soap makes washing dishes more enjoyable. (Eric does most of the dishwashing but these soaps make the whole house smell lovely!) This is another favorite. It’s a concentrated formula and an excellent degreaser.
  3. Mrs. Meyer’s Dish Soap Refill — $9.99 for 48-ounces. Did I mention how much I love basil! I love having the refill size.
  4. Lavender Dish Soap — The lavender dish soap is only $3.94 and the smell of lavender is another favorite!
  5. Kitchen Towel, Set of 2 Fog Gray — $9.95 These are so pretty and the size (18 inches x 28 inches) is perfect for drying dishes or as a kitchen hand towel.
  6. Stargazing” Room Spray Concentrate – Juniper, Eucalyptus, and Sweet Orange — $5.95. I haven’t used this yet but it smells amazing. This product is currently out of stock.
  7. Aunt Fannie’s Carpet Refresher — $8.99 I have lots of carpet in my house and I love the warm, cozy feel it gives our home. But goodness! The carpet catches all the dirt and smells. In addition to vacuuming regularly, I love to use a carpet refresher. I used to buy a different brand but no matter what scent I chose, it always smelled perfumey. Here’s Grove’s description of their product: “This Aunt Fannie’s Carpet Refresher is non-toxic, sulfate-free, triclosan-free, and doesn’t use dyes, artificial fragrances, allergens, or disruptors. In fact, it’s just as safe as any homemade remedy you’d make, but you don’t have to put in the extra work of making it.” Oh, and it’s also safe to use around pets!
  8. Lavender Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner — $3.94 for a 16oz spray bottle! I love this stuff especially for use at our office. After using disinfecting/sanitizing cleaners it’s nice to follow-up with this lavender-scented cleaner!

Before You Order

If you love Grove products, saving money, and never running out of your favorite products then you’ll love their flexible monthly shipments. It’s very customizable—you can choose exactly which products you want to receive and how often you receive them. They’ll send you lots of email reminders before your order ships so you can add or delete any items you want and even change the ship date. Click here to learn more about how to manage your account and subscriptions.

I opted out of the flexible monthly shipments so I don’t have any subscriptions. I’m not a subscription kind of person. I prefer to have total control over what I order and when. Here’s how I do that: Every time I place I order I go to “My Account” at the top of the Grove Collaborative page and on the drop-down menu click “product subscriptions”. A list of what I just ordered pops up.  I “X” out of every item so that I have no subscriptions but you may choose to leave your favorite items and simply change how frequently you receive those items.

Grove Collaborative makes it really easy to order and they’re always offering free gifts and promotions! Grove products are one of my favorite wedding/baby shower/house warming gifts to give!

#2 Eden’s Garden

I’ve been using Eden’s Garden essential oils for years. I’ve tried lots of different brands and prefer Eden’s Garden over all the ones I’ve tried.

Here are a few facts about the company

  • it is women-owned and family-operated since 2009
  • we personally source each essential oil and raw ingredient to ensure affordable prices without compromising quality
  • Voted the #1 Non-MLM essential oil company

One of my favorite ways to use an essential oil is in a diffuser. I have diffusers all around our home and I also use them at the office. Many people are hypersensitive to perfumey smells so I diffuse Eden’s Garden Stress Relief Synergy Blend at the office.

Everyone who walks into the office says, “It smells so good in here!”

This synergy blend includes Sweet Orange, Bergamot, Patchouli, Grapefruit, and Ylang Ylang with the express purpose of alleviating anxiety and soothing stress.

I always buy the 30ml bottle and use 4-6 drops in my diffuser. The bottle lasts forever and keeps the office smelling lovely!

I use a simple diffuser like the one below but you can find lots of different styles to suit your needs and match your home or office decor.

(I also prefer using essential oils rather than perfume and I add essential oils to my nighttime skincare routine but that’s a post for another day!)\

#3 Thieves Household Cleaner

One last product I love is Thieves Household Cleaner by Young Living. The men in my family are quite fond of the Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary oils blend used to make this product. (I also diffuse Thieves essential oil in the kitchen at home!)

The product is ultra-concentrated and lasts forever! I use it as a multi-surface spray and for general cleaning. After my car gets washed and vacuumed (occasionally) I love to wipe down the seats and surfaces!

The link I provided above is through Amazon because that’s where I purchase it. (I used to be a Young Living Distributor.) You can purchase directly from Young Living or you may know someone who is a distributor and could sell this product to you.

Honestly, it’s a little pricey to me but I love it so it’s worth it.

Treat Yourself (or someone else)!

Listen up!  I promise I only share what I love and actually use and when I find something good my first thought is to tell you!

BUY ONLY WHAT YOU LOVE (and what fits your budget)! Don’t just buy something because everyone is else is buying it. If you love lemon-scented Pinesol then, by all means, go for it! (I love Ajax powder!)

I’m not a purist when it comes to products in my home. I love candles and wax melts and Sun Washing Powder. I hate “bathroom spray” no matter the scent and Lysol makes me gag. Sorry.

Scents are powerful and can greatly affect your mood so be sure to carefully choose what you use in your home and office.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and you’ve been inspired to make your home smell lovely.
