The Beauty Secret Every Woman Needs to Know

Sometimes we feel beautiful. Most of the time we struggle with it.
I struggle with it most days. Between the bathroom scales, jeans that don’t fit, the airbrushed Cosmopolitan girl at the grocery store, and those 10x magnification mirrors it feels like a losing battle. #postmenopausal
In this post, I want to share a beauty secret every woman (and man) needs to know!
The Beauty Secret Every Woman Needs
Several years ago Eric and I went to a Bed and Breakfast that had one of those 10x magnification mirrors in the bathroom. I’d never seen one before so I innocently and ignorantly looked into it. What I saw looking back at me was something akin to Jason wicked-witch-meets-Bigfoot.
I. Was. Traumatized.
One minute my youthful, freckled, dewy face was staring back at me and the next thing I knew my pores looked like craters and I had grown a mustache and goatee.
“Why haven’t you said anything about these black hairs on my lip and chin?” I growled.
“What hairs?” the good husband replied.
“Oh, my word! I’m surprised they haven’t poked you when we kiss!” I exclaimed.
He seemed completely unaware of my predicament. I tweezed for an hour. We went to dinner. When we returned to the room I tweezed some more. I came home, bought one of those mirrors and a big tube of hair removal cream. I own no less than 3 pairs of tweezers. One for the bathroom, one for my purse, and one just in case.
How can a few stray whiskers hairs hold so much power? Seriously, is there anything more distracting than finding a chin hair in the middle of church?! Ugh!
We all want to believe we’re beautiful just as we are, chin hairs and all. According to Dove research only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful. (Men, I don’t think you struggle with these same issues but just know that the women in your life probably do.)
But I’ve got a beauty secret I want to share. Whether you’re young, old or somewhere in-between, man or woman, this beauty secret will work for you. It’s very simple.
Keep your eyes on Jesus.
“One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple” (Psalm 27:4).
One of my friends, Lana Peeples, posted a picture recently of her cute little dog staring at a picture she had leaned against the wall. The picture is of Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus.
Here’s what she said about the photo: “To all the dog lovers out there. I just don’t get this. I have this picture of Joseph, Mary, and Baby Jesus. SEVERAL times I have seen Josie sitting with her face 2 inches from Baby Jesus. Just staring at him. It’s crazy!! There is something about that one spot on this pic that just fascinates her.”
I found it interesting and then I read the comment of one of her friends: “Maybe she sees her reflection better in that one spot? She’s a pretty girl…”
The Lord used this ordinary Facebook post to speak truth to my heart.
You can see a better reflection of yourself when you keep your eyes on Jesus.
And the reflection you’ll see is beautiful.
John Piper said, “Give your life to this quest — seeing and savoring more and more of the happifying beauty of God.”
I’ll never see the beauty I long to see by simply looking in the mirror (especially 10x magnification). I must look to Him.
Keep your eyes on him and you’ll know this: You are a reflection of the beautiful Savior who lives within you.
If you know someone who needs to be reminded they’re a beautiful reflection of the Savior, would you please share this post? Here’s a pin to save for later:
My first love (and they call it puppy love) all those years ago did me a tremendous favor. He told me that he thought my faint little mustache was so cute! He adored it! No other fellow ever mentioned it. But I didn’t stress over it like other women because of the kind words of one young man.
What a blessing to have the memory of those kind words! Thanks for sharing, DeeDee.

Women need to hear, ” Sweetheart, you are absolutely beautiful”. Men need to say, ” Sweetheart, you are absolutely beautiful” at least five (5) times a day!!
Jay, you’re right! There is nothing like hearing it from the man you love.
