Do you have a hard time buying a Christmas gift for your husband? I do even after all these years together. Every year around this time he and I have the same conversation. It begins with a question: “What do you want for Christmas?” He and I both almost always say, “Nothing. I can’t think of anything I really want or need.” In spite of that response we both end up buying each other a gift or two because gift giving is fun! No matter what gift you choose to buy, I want to suggest the one gift your husband needs this Christmas.
The One Gift Your Husband Needs This Christmas
In March, Eric and I will celebrate 30 years of marriage. That’s nothing short of a miracle! Marriage is hard work and ours has been no different. I believe there are several keys to a lasting marriage, especially a happy lasting marriage but I’m only sharing one in this post. Here it is:
Prayer.
That’s it.
Something amazing happens to our hearts when we pray for another person. The hardness melts. We become able to get beyond the hurts, and forgive. We even end up loving the person we are praying for. It’s miraculous! It happens because when we pray we enter into the presence of God and He fills us with His Spirit of love. When you pray for your husband, the love of God will grow in your heart for him. Not only that, you’ll find love growing in his heart for you, without him even knowing you are praying. —Stormie Omartian
The one gift your husband needs for Christmas this year,
is you praying for him.
It won’t cost you anything but a little time and you won’t have to worry about returning it.
Prayer is always the perfect gift.
At this point you might be thinking, “But I don’t want to pray for my husband. I’d just as soon buy him some new socks!”
I know how you feel. I’ve been there. I really have. Which is why I want to suggest a book for you to read.
The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian is on my list of all-time favorite books. I’ve read it at least 7 times in the last 13 years. I know because I have the dates written in the front cover. My underlining and margin notes reveal the struggles and heartache but also my deep desire to have the marriage God wants for us.
Here’s what makes The Power of a Praying Wife one of my favorites:
- It’s easy to read and apply. There are 30 short chapters that address a different topic or issue for wives to pray about. She covers lots of topics and shares many personal stories from her own marriage reminding us that we’re not alone.
- There’s a specific prayer provided in each chapter. At the end of the chapter she provides a prayer. This helps when you don’t want to pray for your husband or you don’t know how to pray for him. I’ve prayed the prayers in this book word-for-word many times.
- Each chapter is filled with scripture and ends with verses she calls “Power Tools”. She quotes scripture throughout the book and ends each chapter with a short list of Bible verses you can use when you need Truth to combat the lies of the enemy that invade your heart and mind and threaten your marriage.
Oswald Chambers said, “We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on our difficulties.”
Philippians 4:6 tells us to “Pray about everything.”
