Encouragement As You Navigate A New Season Of Life
Last Updated on January 15, 2026 by Stacy Averette
Have you ever stepped into a season of life that feels completely unfamiliar? Maybe your children have left home, your career has shifted, your health has changed, or your daily routines are no longer the same. Life in these moments can feel like walking in uncharted territory—roads without signs, a map you’ve never used, and an uneasy feeling that you’re far from home.
Psalm 119:19 captures this feeling perfectly: “I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me.” The psalmist calls himself a “foreigner in the land,” someone who knows he cannot navigate life alone. Instead, he leans on God’s Word for guidance.
I love thinking about this imagery: life is a journey, and God has given us a map. His Word points out safe paths, warns of obstacles, and helps us recognize detours. Even when the terrain feels unfamiliar, we can trust the map, knowing it leads us toward our ultimate destination: peace, purpose, and His presence.

To All the Seasons I’ve Lived Before: What I Wish I’d Known
I’m a small-town country girl at heart. Growing up, I lived within a few miles of family and lots of friends. I went to the same school for 12 years and the same church until I was 22. Life was simple and lovely. Eventually, I moved to the big city to go to college. I was excited and scared to death.
Here’s what I wish someone had told me:
Acknowledging the unfamiliar: Saying, “I am a foreigner in this land” is honest. New seasons—whether it’s children leaving home, career shifts, health changes, or even spiritual growth—often feel like walking in a foreign country. Naming it helps reduce anxiety because we stop pretending we have it all figured out.
Recognizing our need for guidance: Just as a traveler needs a map, we need God’s Word. The psalmist isn’t self-sufficient—he depends on the Bible to navigate. For women in a new season, this might mean daily Scripture reading, meditating on promises, or journaling reflections to understand the path.
Seeing life as a journey: Thinking of ourselves as pilgrims or travelers shifts perspective from “I must have all the answers now” to “I’m on a journey, learning as I go.” Life’s unknowns become less intimidating when we see them as part of a roadmap that God has designed for us.
Safe routes and obstacles: The Bible isn’t just theoretical—it shows where we might stumble, where danger lies, and where rest can be found. For a woman stepping into uncharted territory, this is comforting: God has already provided the guideposts.
The ultimate destination: Even when we feel uncertain, the psalmist’s perspective reminds us there’s a direction, a final goal. We’re not wandering aimlessly—our journey has purpose, and the Word lights the way.
There will be countless new seasons in your life, and I’m here to encourage you to keep going in the strength of the Lord. Below, you’ll find a list of practical steps you can take to navigate every season well. At the end of this post, there’s a free printable of Bible verses I turn to when I need guidance and encouragement.
Practical Steps for Navigating Your Season
Here are some ways to walk confidently through new and uncertain seasons with God as your guide:
- Start with Scripture as your roadmap.
Just as travelers study a map before a journey, immerse yourself in God’s Word. Psalm 119 is full of guidance, promises, and wisdom for everyday life. Consider keeping a journal of verses that speak to your current season. - Name your “foreign territory.”
Acknowledge the areas where you feel unfamiliar, uncertain, or even fearful. Giving words to your feelings helps you invite God into those spaces. Prayer can be as simple as saying, “Lord, I don’t know this path, but I trust You to guide me.” - Look for markers along the path.
God often provides signs of His presence: wise counsel from a friend, moments of clarity, answered prayers, or inner peace amidst change. Pause and recognize these markers—they confirm you’re on the right path. - Take one step at a time.
You don’t need to have everything figured out. Focus on the next right step. Like a traveler moving from mile marker to mile marker, small, intentional steps build confidence and faith along the journey. - Stay connected with a community of fellow travelers.
Sharing your experiences with women who understand your stage of life can provide encouragement, accountability, and practical insight. You don’t have to navigate alone.
A Word of Encouragement
Being in a new season can feel uncertain, but remember: God has never left the journey. Even when paths are unknown, His Word is trustworthy. You are never a stranger to Him, and He is always guiding your steps.
So, embrace the adventure. Take your map—His Word—open it daily, and let Him show you the way. The terrain may be unfamiliar, but the Guide is never far away.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” —Psalm 119:105
