One of the things I look for when I’m thrifting is unique, pretty wall art. My home is filled with vintage oil paintings and old framed prints. I also love anything with words, quotes, and Bible verses.
The scroll wall hangings I’ve seen are really nice but they’re a bit more than I want to spend. To my surprise, I found a wooden scroll hanging thingy at the thrift store recently and knew I could DIY it into something special for my home.
DIY Scroll Wall Hanging
When I’m at the thrift store I always make a point to look through the bins at the front of the store. I’ve discovered some of my best treasures in the “junk bins”! Recently I found this for $1:
The picture was tacky and one of the finials was missing on the bottom. But I saw the potential immediately!
Here’s the $10 DIY makeover:
2 Timothy 1:7 has always been one of my favorite Bible verses. I’ve repeated it many times lately. I love having Bible verses written out and placed around the house. I think it’s one of the best ways we can “set our mind on things above”.
Here’s How I Did It:
- Took the scroll apart by removing the small nails at the top and bottom.
- Measured the print to determine the size poster I needed to make.
- Made a print using Picmonkey and saved it on my computer.
- Uploaded the file to Walmart.com photo lab and ordered a 16×20 poster. (It was ready in minutes!)
- Attached the poster to the back of the original print.
- Reattached the wooden scroll.
One of the finials on the top was cracked and falling apart so I removed the chain and replaced the cracked finial with the one from the bottom. I don’t mind that the bottom finials are missing.
If you’d like your own DIY Scroll Wall Hanging I found these on Etsy. There are lots of options, even customizable ones, in Tiffany’s shop: GiddyDesigns515
Thrifty Finds
Sometimes I go to the thrift store and don’t find any “good junk”. Sometimes I see good junk and don’t buy it because it’s not my style or color or the price is too high.
But most of the time I find at least one thing I want to bring home.
Here are some of my recent finds:
- Sweet little bird’s nests.
When I see the 2 Timothy 1:7 verse with the nest I’m reminded of this:
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:26-27 NIV
Fear and worry go hand in hand, don’t they?
I love having this reminder in my home!

How perfect is this?!
My daughter’s getting married in November so I’m on the look out for decor at the thrift store that I can use at the reception. I’ve found a few things already!
My son Jon + Molly were married a few years ago. Of course there were lots of thrifty touches. Click here to see photos and read about their Beautiful, {Thrifty} Wedding.
Have you found any treasures at the thrift store lately? I’d love to hear about it!
