A New Way to See You

I met this beautiful duck recently on a walk in a local park.

As I sat at my computer staring at these photos I learned at least two things from this duck—and she never said a word.

1. There’s more to me than meets the eye

• I’ve lost some feathers in a storm
• I have some scars
• And a lot of “warts”

And if you only look at me “from a distance” you’ll never see or know all that makes me who I am.

2. I have worth and value

• to walk, eat, sleep, breathe,and play
• to have my photo taken
• to just be

because of The One Who Made Me. I don’t have to do anything, prove anything, become anything to have worth and value. I don’t even get to decide if I have  worth and value. I have it because God, the Creator of All Things, made me.

Then I hear:

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14

 ^“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” Luke 6:26

My worth and value is not up for debate as for as God is concerned. But my struggle comes because I live in a culture where it seems my every move and even my very existence is under scrutiny like that of an Olympic athlete. I see the judges’ score cards held high and they’re seldom a “10”. I admit that often I’m the one holding the score card for my own “performance” and judging others with equal scrutiny.

The Accuser of the Brethren yearns to see me collapse under the weight of weary striving, hiding my imperfections, scars and warts. He delights to-see-me-see-myself as unworthy and unloved. He works tirelessly to keep me focused on what man sees at a glance with dim eyes and shallow heart.

There is more to me {and you} than meets the eye. We each have some storm damage, scars and warts; but we each have worth and value because The One Who Made Us proved it when He sent His Son to die for us.

As I write these words I remember my Bible reading from his morning:

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:4-7

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God...And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5: 1,2,5.
