Think Differently, Live Differently: The Life-Changing Power of Renewing Your Mind

Last Updated on October 13, 2026 by Stacy Averette

Years ago, when my husband and I decided to move to New Orleans to continue our education, not everyone thought it was a good idea. In fact, some people were certain we’d be back home before long. And they didn’t mean we’d come home for a visit. They meant we’d give up and return.

We grew up in families where people didn’t move away (at least not that far). There wasn’t necessarily anything wrong with that. It was simply the familiar pattern.

But we believed moving to New Orleans was our next right step even though we were a little nervous about all the unknowns.

We had to decide whether to follow the pattern we’d always known or believe God was leading us somewhere new, and see the opportunity as a grand adventure with Him.

I’ll admit, those years weren’t easy.

We faced challenges, hardships, and plenty of moments where we wondered what we’d gotten ourselves into.

But we also met wonderful people, had unforgettable experiences, and grew in ways we couldn’t have imagined beforehand.

Those years changed us.

They brought us closer to each other, deepened our faith, and expanded our understanding of what life could look like.

New Orleans is still our favorite city.

Sometimes I wonder what we would have missed if we’d let someone else’s expectations—or our own unfamiliarity with moving away—make that decision for us.

Shaped by Thoughts

Have you ever stopped to consider how much of your life is shaped by the way you think?

Not just the big decisions, but the little things, too.

The things you attempt. The opportunities you pursue. The risks you’re willing to take. Even the things you believe are possible for someone like you.

We all have ways of thinking that feel perfectly normal because we’ve thought that way for so long.

But familiar doesn’t always mean true.

One of Scripture’s most powerful invitations is to let God change the way we think.

The Transforming Power of a Renewed Mind

Romans 12:2 tells us:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” (ESV)

I love that word transformed.

Paul isn’t describing a few minor adjustments to our behavior. He’s talking about a profound change that begins on the inside. Think of it as the difference between redecorating a room with new paint and furniture and a complete gut job where you rip everything out to the studs and start over.

Notice the connection: transformation and renewing our minds.

The way we think matters.

Our thoughts influence what we believe. What we believe influences our decisions. And our decisions, repeated over time, help shape the lives we live.

Of course, renewing our minds is more than learning to think positively. It’s learning to think truthfully, with our hearts and minds increasingly shaped by God’s Word.

That may mean we need to reconsider some of our long-held assumptions.

You Can Question What You’ve Always Believed

One of the most helpful questions I’ve learned to ask is:

Is this actually true, or is it simply what I’ve always believed?

Those are two very different things.

Maybe you’ve believed you’re not creative because someone once told you that.

Maybe you’ve assumed you’re too old to learn something new.

Maybe you’ve spent years saying, “I’m just not good at that.”

Or maybe you’ve accepted someone else’s expectations as the boundaries of your own life.

It’s worth asking where those beliefs came from.

Some thoughts reflect wisdom and experience. Others stem from fear, insecurity, habit, or assumptions we’ve never examined.

Not every familiar thought deserves our agreement.

In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul says to take thoughts captive to obey Christ. In context, he’s addressing arguments that oppose the knowledge of God. The passage reminds us that God’s truth reaches beyond our thinking.

We don’t have to accept every thought simply because it enters our minds.

Renewing Your Mind is an Ongoing Process

I wish I could tell you that one good decision permanently changes the way we think.

But renewal is ongoing.

We encounter new circumstances, new responsibilities, new seasons, and new opportunities to trust God.

And sometimes the old thoughts return.

“What if I fail?”

“What will people think?”

“Who am I to try something like that?”

When they do, we can learn to respond differently.

We can pause long enough to recognize the thought.

We can examine it in light of Scripture.

We can ask whether it’s true, wise, and consistent with who God has called us to be.

And then we can choose our next step.

Not every courageous decision is the right decision, of course. Wisdom, prayer, and godly counsel matter.

But fear, familiarity, or other people’s opinions shouldn’t automatically decide what’s possible.

A Different Way of Thinking Can Lead to a Different Way of Living

Looking back over my life, I can see so many moments when growth required me to change my thinking first.

Some decisions were enormous.

Others were almost laughably small. (Like deciding to become a hat person.)

But each one challenged an assumption about what I could do, who I could become, or what life had to look like.

And I’m still learning.

That’s one of the beautiful things about walking with God. We never reach a point where we’ve learned everything there is to learn or grown all there is to grow.

There’s always room for renewed understanding, deeper faith, greater wisdom, and faithful action.

So here’s a question worth considering today:

What might change in your life if you allowed God to change the way you think?

You may discover that some of the limits you’ve lived with were never limits God placed on you in the first place.
